"Our mission is to develop, manufacture and supply advanced motion sensing components. Our vision is to become a world leader for the supply of motion sensing components and systems."
RLS was founded in December 1989 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
RLS stands for "Rotary and Linear Motion Sensors".
In the early beginnings we were focused on providing solutions for a wide field of motion control and metrology applications.
From 2000 the company began to specialise in the design and manufacture of magnetic encoders and components for supply to industrial clients and distributors worldwide.
Standard products and custom solutions
We design, produce and supply advanced rotary and linear motion sensors to meet growing global market demands. Our experience and knowledge combined with innovative ideas enable us to offer custom product solutions to match customer's needs. The development of a customised solution usually begins with selecting the appropriate standard product and defining the extent of desired changes. A wide variety of adjustments is possible including physical size and shape, communication protocols, connectors, the degree of environmental protection etc. During the whole process, our engineers are able to advise on what solutions worked well for similar applications in the past and how cost reductions can be achieved.
Depending on the agreed final specification, this approach enables us to significantly reduce the development time while at the same time offering an extremely competitive solution to our customers.
Over the last few decades, we worked closely with partners from a broad range of industries. From heavy machinery, advanced surgical and collaborative robots, aerospace, and submarine applications to one of the largest solar power plants in the world, our encoders comply with even the toughest requirements.

RLS Merilna tehnika d.o.o. is a Slovenian company which designs, manufactures and supplies advanced rotary and linear motion sensors for the global industrial market. The company was founded in 1989. Since then, RLS has worked closely with partners in a wide range of industries, such as heavy engineering, advanced surgical and collaborative robotics, electromobility, aerospace and submarine applications, etc.
RLS joined the consortium on October 1, 2020 to strengthen its activities in the field of magnetic pattern printing and to support the qualification of TMR sensors compared to competitive sensors. The technical goal of RLS is to validate TMR arrays for stripe and bar code reading on various magnetic substrates and to evaluate the feasibility of using an existing magnetic camera based on a Hall array sensor ASIC for reading bar codes. The RLS will propose a hardware, firmware and software architecture for a compact barcode reading device based on the designed and measured TMR arrays.
This project was funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 870017.
Mag-ID project consortium partners meeting in Lisbon
In October 2021, the RLS team of scientists, engineers and the project manager from Mag-ID participated in the consortium partners meeting hosted by Inesc in Lisbon. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the latest results of the Mag-ID project, to strengthen the cooperation between the parties and to search for new solutions in an open discussion.
During the three-day meeting, the representatives of Inesc, Inspectron and RLS presented their progress and defined the following tasks related to the new generation of sensors for magnetic barcode reading. The RLS and Inspectron teams presented their prototype magnetic barcode readers based on existing generations of sensors. They pointed out the requirements that proved essential for the application and proposed measurement methods for quality control. Inesc explained the main steps in sensor fabrication process. The meeting was also an opportunity to clarify some project management and report related questions.
Last but not least, we had a very fruitful face-to-face discussion about the challenges we face and exchanged some very interesting ideas that we will certainly put to the test in the coming months.
Collaboration with INESC-MN
In the scope of MAG ID project RLS is collaborating with INESC-MN. Recently some of RLS engineers spent two weeks at INESC-MN in Lisbon, working on the development of TMR sensor. The aim of the project is to develop magnetoresistive sensors adapted to our magnetic scales.
Sensor architecture is being adjusted so as to deliver high signal output and low signal distortions. Such experience is beneficial for both partners, since mutual understanding of requirements and limitations is the key to successful end product.
Inesc visit in Slovenia
In March 2022, RLS team had the opportunity to return Inesc's hospitality and host a meeting in Slovenia. During a two-day workshop, visitors from Lisbon were invited to join the company tour and see our production facilities and workflow. Most interesting part for our project partners were clean-room processes and equipment. We exchanged some good-practice examples from both sides and thus enriched our professional knowledge and know-how. The meeting continued with an exciting debate over received samples of MR sensors, provided by Inesc. We were happy to confirm that our measurement methods provide consistent results and that samples work as predicted by initial tests at Inesc. At the end, we discussed future experiments and opportunities.
The visit was overall very pleasant and fruitful. Many pending questions regarding the ongoing project were answered. Both partners agreed that there are many opportunities for future collaboration, and we will certainly continue with our activities to further improve our product.

We create life-changing innovations that impact millions of lives around the world
RLS has a long standing tradition of working closely with various universities. Their focus of resources and knowledge in specialised scientific fields enables us to expedite our new product development process while offering them the opportunity to work on exciting new projects. One example of such successful cooperation was the development of an integrated Hall sensor ASIC for measuring the rotation of a diametrically polarised magnet placed directly above the ASIC.
This later became the accepted standard of measuring rotation in the industry due to many favorable characteristics such as low cost, small IC footprint, high resolution and extreme robustness. It is a little known fact but RLS was the first company in the world to develop this novel concept which is now used in millions of ASICs sold globally each year. These reliable ASICs remain the core of our OnAxisTM products.
